Smile Pretty

A vibe like no other.

Through their music and live performance, The Outer Vibe captures a “Big America” energy that is larger than a 1960s Detroit assembly line. Their sound is a collage of the motor city’s passion and power, the upbeat, good feelings of the West coast, and a cinematic southwestern nostalgia, a blend they like to call “surf disco.” The familiar, organic music supports a positive lyrical message of perseverance, maintaining relationships, and a carefree lifestyle.

The Outer Vibe’s latest music was created in collaboration with producer Brad Dollar (Grateful Dead, Keb-Mo, The National) and mastering engineer Joe LaPorta (The Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend) and will be released in early 2015.

They filled their studio with dusty vintage amps and keyboards and vintage-modeled microphones to accurately capture the sounds they desired.

When asked what the new music sounds like, the band’s immediate response is, “Clint Eastwood drinking a pina colada while listening to Dick Dale.” Offering a more introspective explanation, Dollar says, “When I listen to the latest batch of The Outer Vibe productions, I feel like I’m on a vacation I don’t want to leave. The guitars feel like a Cheshire smile on a sunny beach, the drums beat like perfect waves on the shore.

Everything stays glued together with sticky-sweet vocals, trumpets sounding from the west, and bass sounds that walked down from another planet. All at the same moment providing reflection and rejoice.”

Their new music is a follow-up to their 2012 album “Hoka Hey”, which independently achieved much success, getting top 5 request at radio in Michigan, Wisconsin and the Dakotas and licensing from ABC News’s “Good Morning, America” and West Michigan’s Baker College in 2013.

With a new drummer, Noah Snyder, on board and a renewed, pop-hued approach, Grand Rapids’ The Outer Vibe is re-branding itself in a way as it works toward release of a new album in 2015 – working with the likes of producer Brad Dollar (The National, Bob Weir) and mastering engineer Joe LaPorta (The Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend). – Read more HERE

Featured Artist The Outer Vibe – Jivewired Journal

My relationship with The Outer Vibe goes all the way back to 2006 – long before there was a Jivewired or even an inkling of what Jivewired would be.  I’ve reviewed all of their albums, seen them live in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee, and this summer they played at The Buffalo Chip at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on the Jivewired/Axis Stage.

They’re more than clients.  They’re dear friends.  I am proud to have the honor of being one of the first media outlets to promote their new video for their latest single, Shining Like A Diamond, which the band released today. Thank you Sean, Nick, Lisa, Andrew and Noah for this wonderful honor. Dig. – Read more HERE

Outer Vibe rides cinematic surf disco pipeline – South Bend Tribune

In the mid 1960s, there was a science fiction television series called “The Outer Limits” that began each episode with a cold voice-over opening: “You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to — The Outer Limits.”

That narrative could easily as well apply to The Outer Vibe, a Grand Rapids-based rock band that draws inspiration from the West Coast and spaghetti Western film scores as well as the driving rhythms of the Motor City.

The Outer Vibe’s music defies easy categorization, so guitarist Nick Hosford calls it “cinematic surf disco. – Read more HERE
